I'm still not sure why it's failing for you, unfortunately.

Actually, by the way, you should change the permission of the .so to
be non-world writable too.  That's just as dangerous.

Anyway, is this by chance on a linux system running selinux or
something?  I'm wondering if you're getting permission denied from a
protected operating system issue.
