<Warning: Personal opinion follows> IMO, this module implementation is fundamentally flawed, and I would prefer that it wasn't distributed with the Net-SNMP code at all. It's on my list of things to re-write in a more portable manner. Until that happens, it'll probably continue to be shipped, but I'm not convinced it's useable - for exactly the reasons you are seeing.
