Hi there,

I posted this message a few days ago on the users list
but had no answer, so I thought it may be worth it
posting it here. This looks like a bug in
net-snmp-5.3-4.2, what do you think ?

Here's the initial message :

I'm trying to use MRTG to monitor a dynamic adsl ppp
connexion on a Fedora Core 5 box with
net-snmp-5.3-4.2. The connexion is interrupted every
other day by the provider and init restarts it
automatically thanks to this line in /etc/inittab:

pd:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/pppd call adsl

Now the problem is that the old instances of the
interface are not cleared from the IF-MIB tree, so
multiple instances appear and this confuses mrtg:

>linux#snmpwalk -v 2c -c public localhost
IP-MIB::ipAdEntIfIndex
IP-MIB::ipAdEntIfIndex.127.0.0.1 = INTEGER: 1
IP-MIB::ipAdEntIfIndex.172.24.39.249 = INTEGER: 2
IP-MIB::ipAdEntIfIndex.196.206.94.10 = INTEGER: 8

but

>linux#snmpwalk -v 2c -c public localhost
IF-MIB::ifDescr
IF-MIB::ifDescr.1 = STRING: lo
IF-MIB::ifDescr.2 = STRING: eth0
IF-MIB::ifDescr.3 = STRING: sit0
IF-MIB::ifDescr.7 = STRING: ppp0
IF-MIB::ifDescr.8 = STRING: ppp0

Things go back to normal after snmpd is restarted:

linux#service snmpd restart
Stopping snmpd:                     [  OK  ]
Starting snmpd:                     [  OK  ]

linux#snmpwalk -v 2c -c public localhost
IF-MIB::ifDescr
IF-MIB::ifDescr.1 = STRING: lo
IF-MIB::ifDescr.2 = STRING: eth0
IF-MIB::ifDescr.3 = STRING: sit0
IF-MIB::ifDescr.8 = STRING: ppp0

Is this a bug ? Is there a way to have snmpd update
the MIB on the fly ?

Thanks,
Christian
