Preserve me from code that "tries to be helpful".

If you're going to do this, please make it configurable (and preferably
off by default).   I prefer to be in control of my systems - not the other way
round.   If I want the config re-read, then I'll say so!

  There's nothing worse than being in the middle of something and have
a dialog box come up saying "rebooting in four minutes to install updates",
with no way to cancel it.
