Hmmm... yes, that does seem to be happening.
Which is odd, because the "clean" target typically looks like:
clean: cleansubdirs $(OTHERCLEANTODOS)
rm -f core ${OBJS} ${LOBJS} .....
rm -rf .libs
Surely that last command should remove these .o files?
