Since these pleas for free work pop up periodically, it's worth
pointing out to the broader group that there are people and companies
willing to accept money to perform the work you require. We just
completed such a contract and are very pleased with the results.
Moreover, most of the code was released into the top of tree so it
will be supported as the Net-SNMP project moves forward.
Why did I choose this route? I was asked by management to enhance our
SNMP implementation. Given the complexity of Net-SNMP, my team lacked
the proficiency with the code to complete the requested work in a
timely fashion. Further, our expertise would have greater impact on
the final product focused on other projects. In the end, the contract
was cheaper than paying an in-house engineer to suffer the required
learning curve.
I don't feel comfortable announcing the contracting company's name
without their permission, but should they require it, I would be
happy to recommend them.
Remember: just because it's open source doesn't mean a market hasn't
built up around it…
