It's been pointed out to me that I was getting confused between the encoding of integer values (which does work in a semi-obvious way) and the encoding of OID subidentifiers (which uses this 7-bit plus continuation bit) I really should know better than to respond in hurry, last thing on a Sunday night, and without actually checking the facts first. I will now hang my head in shame, and copy out the BER specs by hand 200 times as punishment.....
