The idea was actually to implement a delayed discovery mechanism (if I
recall) where the session wouldn't probe for the engine until it was
absolutely needed.  That certainly shouldn't have broken -Z usage,
however.  But I'm not sure your patches are the right solution either,
unfortunately.
