If the OID overheads are causing a significant problem for you,
there was some work a few years back on mechanisms for "OID compression"
(including making use of the similarities between successive OIDs in
a typical message, to reduce this overhead).

Nothing ever came of this in terms of extending the SNMP standards,
but these proposals might be a useful starting point if you needed to
do something similar.
   I should even have some code for the Net-SNMP libraries, if you
wanted to have a look at that.  (Wes keeps trying to encourage me
to do something with this!)
