Currently it is possible to build Net-SNMP with the following Microsoft
Visual Studio compilers:
* Visual Studio 6.0 without Platform SDK.
* Visual Studio 6.0 with Platform SDK.
* Visual Studio 2002.
* Visual Studio 2003.
* Visual Studio 2005 Express.
* Visual Studio 2005.
* Visual Studio 2008 Express.
* Visual Studio 2008.
(Note: Visual Studio editions later than MSVC 6.0 include a version of the
Platform SDK.)
Supporting Visual Studio 6.0 without platform SDK made sense at the time
when Visual Studio 6.0 was the most popular choice among the above
environments and when it was inconvenient to download the Microsoft Platform
SDK because of limited download bandwidth. Since then the number of Net-SNMP
users building Net-SNMP with Visual Studio 6.0 without Platform SDK has
decreased significantly and the bandwidth of an average Internet connection
has increased.
I'm proposing to drop support for building the Net-SNMP source code with
Visual Studio 6.0 without Platform SDK in order to simplify maintenance,
testing and releasing Net-SNMP. Those who want to keep using Vistual Studio
6.0 can download the Windows Server 2003 Platform SDK (
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A55B6B43-E24F-4EA3-A93E-40C0EC4F68E5&displaylang=en
).
The proposed change will not have an impact on the generated Net-SNMP
binaries nor on the users who install the Net-SNMP binaries because since
considerable time the Net-SNMP binaries are generated using a build
environment that includes the Platform SDK.
