Thanks for the link. I'll make my son read it too :-)

The problem with open source is "will they be a good steward
*forever*". Sourceforge's only mission was housing open source
project. Github's only mission was housing open source projects.
Microsoft has an entirely different business model, though they're
admittedly changing and improving as Keith mentioned. So I'm
*hesitantly* feeling better, but this is a really odd corner case IMHO.

The upside: the code will always work and git ensures there are
replications everywhere.

What I worry about is the long term support for everything else needed:
wikis, mailinglists, issues and web pages (as I've already said). Do I think MS
will make use sharepoint for all wiki style documentation? Hope not!
And, more importantly, I assume not. But in the long term we need to
ensure we can get the support we need for every aspect of a project AND
be able to migrate away at any point without lock-in.

I'm always concerned with large companies that typical business models
involve two aspects, not one: "make the best product so people want to
stay with us" and "lock them in so they can't leave in case we're
disrupted".

It looks like for now, based on opinions expressed so far, we'll hold on
the move for a bit. Sadness as I was looking forward to it, but I think
it would be foolish to make the jump immediately until we hear a better
statement about the long term viability promises that hopefully come out
of MS.
