Hi

Firstly what a great piece of work net-snmp is.

Secondly please help....

I know this has been asked before and the answers
usually have been, "yes, with a bit of work" or "read
the proxy section of the snmpd.conf" I have read it.
I have seen postings answered by Dave Shield, Wes
Hardaker and David Perkins sorry for bringing this up
again.

What I am trying to achieve is the following:

                 NetView (SNMPv1)
                        |
                        |
                        |
               Proxy (NetSNMP 5.1.1)
                   / | \
                  / | \
                 / | \
              host1 host2 host3 (netSNMP 5.1.1)

Netview to proxy is SNMPv1
Proxy to Firewalls if possible should be SNMPv3

I wish to configure NetView to poll the same OID trees
on multiple devices (for instance
Interfaces.iftable.ifentry.ifoperstatus) in a
customer network through a gateway with interfaces on
my network and on the customers (10.x.x.x), so ideally
I would configure NetView with a bunch of objects all
with the IP address of the proxy and a community
string containing the hostname (host1, host2,
host3...).

With Netview configured as above when the proxy
receives the poll with the destination in the
community string it forwards it to the relevant
host, the reply data from the hosts should be sent via
the proxy as there is no direct communication between
the NetView and the customer hosts.

Am I on the right track, if so how do I configure the
proxy?

If I am miles off (I have taken note of snmpd.conf
which recommends using contexts if you have end-to-end
SNMPv3) should I go with something like the SNMP
security pack and use this to add support for
contexts, can I create my own FREE SNMP security pack
that will work with NetView by using NetSNMP?

So in-a-nutshell I need to access multiple firewalls
on a network which is not directly connected to my
NMS, through a proxy which is connected to both
networks.

Regards
Richard
