I'd suggest there are two main options.
    a)  An AgentX subagent (as William also suggests)
    b)  A "dynamically loadable module"

Neither of these requires a full source distribution,
though you might need to install the "net-snmp-devel" package.
Both of these approaches are described on the project Tutorial
web pages.
Go to

and look at sections 4 and 5
