No, should be ok if you merge the right files (most Makefile.in from each
subdirectory).

Did you try 5.0.9, which is the latest 5.0 release?

Did you try 5.1.2, the latest 5.1.x release?

You might also want to try the current cvs, which will be the soon to be
released 5.2.0.
