I automated the install of Perl 5.8.1 from the jumpstart box with the following
./Configure -Dprefix=/usr -Uuselargefiles -Dcc=gcc -de .. thinking these were all the options I required. After your comment below, I decided to manually install Perl choosing each option carefully as specified in README.solaris. I then followed the installation of net-snmp to the letter and it worked. One of the options that sticks out is ... Try to use 64-bit integers, if available? [y] (unless you're using 32-bit Solaris). I have a 64-bit kernel. >isainfo -kv 64-bit sparcv9 kernel modules This defaulted to [n] which I chose (be default with -de). I'm not sure if this is the entire issue. I'll need to go through all of the options again to make sure I have everything covered with my automated install. Thanks for your help. It couldn't (obviously) be stressed enough the importance of getting the Perl compilation correct! I suppose snmptrapd failed due to the embedded perl trap handling routines, which is why I didn't see the issue with the other net-snmp processes. You have been very patient! Thanks again. Thanks also go to Thomas Anders, Dave Deaves and Sjoerd Pieter for their suggestions.
