Did you try the obvious, i.e. creating a symlink libsnmp.so->libsnmp.so.5.x.y?

FWIW, latest SuSE 9.2 does *not* ship with libsnmp.so, but only with
libsnmp.so.5, so HPLIP's configure routine would fail there as well, if it's really looking for libsnmp.so *only*.
