Hmmm...

OK - Try running both the master agent and subagent in the
foreground ("-f -Le" or equivalent), and with packet dumps
turned on ("-d").  Those are for the main 'snmpd' agent.
You may need to configure this by adding explicit code to
the subagent, depending on how this was coded.


When the subagent connects, what does the master agent see?

That worries me.
The master agent should delete this socket as part of closing
itself down.  How are you shutting down the master agent?
