You could definitely do this.  I'm not sure what the best way to do it
is as I'm not sure exactly what is running over the serial port.  In
theory, the unix transport might work but it's really designed for a
unix domain file-based socket.  I haven't analyzed it to determine if
it would work over a raw device like a serial port, but if it doesn't
it wouldn't take much to copy it to another file and implement a
device domain.
