There are several systems available that can monitor, record and graph
such information - both information gathered via SNMP, and by other
means. The main "back-end" system (for actually gathering and storing
the data) is RRDTool - see

There are several front-ends to this - including MRTG (which was
the forerunner of RRDTool), Cricket, and Cacti (which seems to
be one of the most popular now).  There are links to most of these
(and many more) on the web pages above.

I'm not sure if there's anything to automate this, but have a look
at the links on that site.  There may be something relevant there.
