You think it's painful for you!!!  Try being us!

We aiming to please as main people as possible...  the paranoid that
doesn't like to move to new code till it's well tested, and those that
always like the cutting edge.  Thus we support the last few major
release "trees" for a while, but only patches go into the older
releases.   thus, 5.2.2 contains fixes/patches over 5.2.1 but 5.3 has
a slew of new stuff as well.
