Does it also happen if you use a plain "./configure --with-defaults"? If
so, it may be a problem with your version of "tar". The file above is
shipped with the distribution! Please try to unpack with GNU tar instead
of IRIX tar.
If you run into compile problems on IRIX with 5.3.0.1, make sure you use
CC=c99 and consider using the latest 5.3.x CVS tarball:
http://www.net-snmp.org/nightly/tarballs/ .
