Ohhh.... if it were only so easy to predict the future.

WSDM and similar technologies have seen some success on high end
systems (read: servers, clients, but not routers, switches) and
have had issues with interoperability between vendors. But you can do
a lot more with it easily I think (I'm not an expert). SNMP is much
more bare-bones but has, so far, done better with interoperability
between vendors.

Cisco is actually looking into netconf, which is sort of in between
SNMP and WSDM in terms of complexity. Think raw simple XML over ssh.
However, the lead netconf person there quit because of their lack of
forward direction in that space. And the hard part of the netconf
work (interoperable data models: kinda like the MIBs for SNMP) within
the IETF is being tabled for the future. Thus, right now it's just a
protocol with non-interoperable data being sent over it. Not a big
win. And don't get me started on the security issues with it. You
should know that you need to trust all your users to be equivalent
(root).

Meanwhile, many governments and other parts of the industry are
actually spinning up, not down, on SNMP.

Time will tell...
