Typically, it's because there are errors in the MIB syntax.
The purpose of smilint, and the web validation tool is to check the
syntax of MIB files.
So they are extremely rigourous in their parsing, and will complain
about minor errors.

The purpose of snmptranslate is to convert between numeric OIDs and
textual forms,
using the same MIB parsing routines as the rest of the Net-SNMP suite.
Our tools don't pretend to offer rigourous MIB validation checks -
we're happy to silently correct minor errors. If nothing else, this
cuts down on the number of queries that we have to respond to on the
mailing lists.

It's an example of the long-standing Internet rule-of-thumb:
"Be liberal in what you accept, be strict in what you generate".

Yes - I know there is some debate about the wisdom of such an
approach, but that's what we've chosen. The MIB-syntax tool
developers have (quite understandably) gone for a more strict
approach.

It's worth using smilint et al to get your MIB files correct - then
everything should be able to handle them properly. You can continue
to use our tools in the meantime - you don't have to be blocked while
you work at getting the syntax exactly 100% correct.
But if your MIBs don't pass smilint, then you must be prepared for
other SNMP applications to reject them. Saying that the Net-SNMP
tools are happy is no defence.
