I understand the need for some mechanism to implement a split table,
but the approach you are suggesting doesn't feel right.  You seem to
be trying to force one helper to deal with two different scenarios.

You've given me some ideas about how to implement this, within the
existing framework.  But it might take me a little while to come up
with something suitable.
