 thank you for the advise. I did as you suggested and re-ran the configure in a 
clean directory. The first run of make seemed to get further in the build 
process before it failed. So I took a chance and used the Solaris make 
(/usr/ccs/bin/make) rather than the GNU version and in fact the mini-agent 
build completed on the second attempt.
 
 I'm not certain if the problem is solely related to the version of make, or if 
there was some corruption in my initial build directory. Currently I'm trying a 
new full build of the agent, again with the Solaris make. If that succeeds, my 
problems  would indeed point back to the make or the  arguments I used on my 
prior builds.

Can you please start again from scratch by unpacking the source to a new
directory, run

  ./configure --enable-mini-agent

and report back? FWIW, this works fine for me with 5.4.1 on Solaris 10.
