I've been using vendor packages for easier management, but my 
environment also contains self-compiled packages and I'm sure I'll have 
to compile the new source myself (vendors never have the very latest 
version available). It could also allow me to shape it better to my 
system, I guess.

As I said: no problems about compiling and installing the packages 
myself (even from SVN). I'd be glad for just having the source, but 
binaries are welcome if you prefer to have the very same binary code 
being tested in other environments.
