I know this must be a stupid question becuase I have not actually found anyone saying "no you cant" nor "yes you can" while diggin all half the day through the archives and google. I just really need to know to put my idea to bed.
Can you use any SNMPSet/Get/Walk commands to connect to a MAC Address instead of an IP Address. I have MAC addresses to a variety of devices on my network and need to implement a provisioning system to program a specific IP4 IP to each device depending on what its mac address is. The system I am using to connect to these devices by MAC are on one flat wireless network connected by bridges. I am successfuly using Net-SNMP tools to provision these devices by connecting to an IPV4 Address now. We have an adminsitrative issue where tech's keep making mistakes changing/entering the IP4 address on the devices. The MAC address for these devices are all known upfront at procurement time and cannot be changed so I was hoping to change my provision scripts to somehow connect to the device MAC address and set its IP and other details. Or shoot each tech after the third mistake. In the MAN pages it suggests using IPX::What:Appears:To:Be:A:MAC:Address but evidentially Im too novice to understand IPX.
