All, I'm setting up a snmptrapd farm for our network, and plan to use a network load balancer in front of the snmptrapd processes to provide HA and load balancing. The one question that came up from my network engineers is how snmptrapd determines the IP address of the agent sending the TRAP or INFORM message, and how it determines how to send the INFORM reply.
Is snmptrap using information sent within the SNMP PDU, or is it using information from the IP transport itself? This is important because the load balancer we are using doesn't do packet translation, and as such, the TRAPS will be coming to the snmptrapd from the load balancers, at least as far as the IP layer knows. Basically, we are not planning on using NAT in the load balancer. Will this work? Is there something I can do to make sure it works?
