I just to reply to this suggestion. It appears the propblem was the snmpd was not running with -x option. Once -x was enabled the agentXPingInterval can be left at default level, and no config file is needed for the subagent.

Not necessarily - the subagent should be able to re-connect to the master agent. See the directive 'agentxPingInterval' in the 'snmpd.conf(5)' man page.
