I don't know about doing this on the netatalk server, but there are 
plenty of utilities on the Macintosh which do this and would be more 
likely to leave everything the way it should be.  File Buddy is one.  
Programmers could use Applescript.  Or, if you're into Perl, you could 
even use MacPerl.
