Gill,
Thanks for that link. I listened to it this morning before I went to
work: really insightful and useful.
The vitamin D thing is very interesting - are we actually doing the
wrong thing by telling people in high-risk categories to stay indoors,
thereby depriving them of sunlight and Vitamin D (assuming they're not
taking supplements) and thus possibly compromising their immune response?
Also of interest is the fact that BAME populations suffer more from
hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes, and tend to get them
earlier. But hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes are not
on the government criteria for shielding - see
https://digital.nhs.uk/coronavirus/shielded-patient-list. Maybe they
should be? Or maybe multi-morbidity should be a criterion for inclusion
on the shielding list?
Or maybe we shouldn't be shielding at all? There's a good article about
this in the Guardian -
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/may/29/shielding-impossible-coronavirus-testing-and-tracing
.

These are both brilliant, Ruth. Thanks for sharing. Cornel West
completely nails it.
It's really shocking to see the level of police violence on the
streets of the US. It's not new, but mobile phones and social
media have made it more transparent.
I'm hearing news of a 'Black Lives Matter' demo (maintaining
social distancing) in George Square in Glasgow next Sunday 7 June.

"It is a lynching at the highest level, and I thank God that
people are out on the streets.
The system cannot reform itself. The "black faces in high
places" approach doesn't work. These people become too
accommodated to the capitalist economy, the militarised nation
state, the market driven culture tied with celebrity, status,
power, all that superficial stuff that means so much to so
many fellow citizens.
Meanwhile we have a Neofascist president who doesn't care and
a Neoliberal democratic party with no solutions...
The masses of black people the precious poor and working class
people, they are the ones that are left out and they feel so
thoroughly powerless, helpless, hopeless, then you get rebellion.
We have choice between non violent revolution, the democratic
sharing of power, of wealth, resources, and respect, if we
don't get that kind of sharing we are going to get more
explosions."

Thanks for the exchange Max and Michael.
Max stay safe!
Michael I have been very struck by the power of your recent
protests locally re the government's shocking handling of
Covid-19 - it's obvious that their resonance comes from the
political solidarity that you have been building through
regular protests against racism in your hometown.
Respect!
