Dear Johannes, Thank you for your concerns and asking about my work. I started a new artistic adventure during the pandemic, which includes artist books, wearables and a performance, ‘Be Like Body–Obsolete’, presented at 3 online international festivals. It is a reflection about obsolescence, technology and ageing. I stripped down discarded electronic devices and created a galaxy with this e-waste, which had at the centre a closed space consisting of 8 iMac shells, in which I performed. I made a video, to which Annie and five other writers responded. Their texts were recorded and mixed into a soundtrack that informed my performance. Some excerpts here: https://suzonfuks.net/be-like-body-obsolete-4 as well as links to reviews, downloadable e-book with the poetry, which can be also listened to.
Now, I am developing a new installation REVEAL, which will be activated by scheduled live art performances, daily guided meditations open to the audience, who will also voice at times their views, manipulate ‘hands-on’ the electronic parts, creating new galaxies and constellations. The metamorphosis will be filmed and photographed from above, and projected in realtime on one wall of the venue. I am also experimenting with new techniques for the wearable. With the creation of robots, AI and the Internet of Things, our bodies are becoming outdated. While we are researching and quantifying how human brains function, acts of assembly highlight how our senses, perception and creativity are what differentiates us from our machines and makes us unique as humans. The pandemic emphasises/ed how coming together is necessary. If the Internet gives a possibility to ‘assemble’ our fragmented and ‘isolated’ lives, we still need to delve into the knowledge of our bodies, and our relationships with each other and the natural world. As the Internet becomes increasingly economically-driven and mono-cultural, it is important to see which demographics are being ‘discarded’ first, with unequal and changing implications pertaining to specific abilities, gender, race, age, acquired disease or privilege. The multilingual aspect of REVEAL highlights the wealth of various cultures, promotes acceptance and makes space for culture and language inclusivity, destabilising the primacy of English. voila in a nutshell.... :) I hope to be able to present it in various places soon. Suggestions are welcome! sending love, Suzon On Sat, 7 May 2022, 01:44 Johannes Birringer, < [email protected]> wrote: > dear Suzon > I was alarmed to read your post about the floods in your area, and the > increasingly catastrophic effects of climate change, > and of course the political instabilities, the wars, and ongoing refugee > crisis in this world we live in, it is incredibly > disheartening.
