This reminded me of Samuel Beckett, especially 'it is enough that we can go out and walk.  For a mile or so and return somewhat near where we began . that is what we are given' - and the stuff about the dictation machine. I like the little coda at the end, too, which reminded me of a Ted Hughes poem called Lumb Chimneys: 'Before these chimneys can flower again/They must fall into the only future, into earth.'
