Own (sound) art: Podcasting. Or how to own art by subscription folly launches a month-long series of downloadable podcasts to promote the medium and its potential. folly has commissioned SoundNetwork to produce one podcast a week for the whole of February, and audiences can expect strange sounds, electronica, documentary, politics and music in this experimental series.
The 4 part series begins with "Transmission K" by Columbian sonic artist Andres Burbano: an account of the fall to earth of doomed cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov. Podcasting has quickly become a broadcasting medium of the masses. It is often said that 'anyone can do it'. All you need is an audio file and a server from which to distribute the file. What is so appealing about podcasting, and sets it apart from just streaming audio from a website or server, is that a listener can subscribe to a podcast and automatically receive updated files whenever they are connected to the internet. SoundNetwork invited 4 artists to create a podcast in an attempt to define what the medium could offer as a means of creating and exhibiting art on the internet. The artists, who incidentally are not all 'sound' artists, have been asked to exploit the medium the way they feel best suits their work. Check out the results, and sign up to the weekly podcasts at <http://www.folly.co.uk/soundnetwork> folly is a leading digital arts organisation.
