Lorna Collins and John R Lovett present ‘Why do we need Modernism now?’ broadcast today, Weds 7th Feb on the ‘Clear Spot’, Resonance 104.4fm, London, 7-8pm GMT

We respond to the recent surge of interest in Modernism as a crucial but as yet indefinable, implacable style or epoch in relation to our contemporary culture and society. From the shock of a painter, Tomma Abts, winning the Turner Prize, to continued uproar about Modernist exhibitions in the press debating its controversial legacy, implications and meaning, there is clearly a need to revisit Modernism and understand what drove it. Our programme explores and questions this, asking why Modernism prompted such a strong response and why particularly now, in our own post-ism-ic, disorientated time? Turning to curators, artists, philosophers and the public; concerning design, painting and music from Schoenberg, Ives, Visage and Einstüzende Naubauten, alongside the style’s relation with war – we initiate and follow the Modernist dispute with the aim of placing and questioning it, asking where we are now and what will this lead on to?
