Philippine left-wing groups turn to YouTube, Internet to spread word about killings.

A left-wing group whose street protests over the unsolved murders of activists have been blocked by Philippine police has turned instead to the Internet to spread its message.

Complaining of the government's failure to halt the rash of killings and attempts to muzzle protests, human rights groups are seeking nontraditional ways to get the world's attention.

A large left-wing group, Bayan, has created its own channel on Google's popular YouTube video-sharing site to post videos of slain activists and violent dispersals of street protests.

One sarcastic video portrays President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as a calm-faced dictator, with an army general brandishing an M-16 assault rifle behind her.

Another group, the human rights organisation Karapatan, is arranging for Manila-based relatives of activists allegedly slain by government forces to testify via the Internet before the Permanent People's Tribunal, an independent opinion court that is investigating the killings and is to hold hearings March 21-25 in The Hague.

"The Internet is a new arena that's free from many restrictions," said Renato Reyes, Bayan's secretary-general.
