Seminar by Taru Elfving:

Wed 2.5. (10.00-16.00)
seminar: rethinking feminine + space

Feminine Spaces

What could be a feminine space? How could a space be made feminine? Is a
haunted house a feminine space? Is it a space of touch and sound instead of
vision? Is it a space yet to be/come? Or a space we tell into being? A space
of communication?
Taru Elfving writer and curator, based at department of Visual Cultures,
Goldsmiths College, London. Lives and works in London and Finland. Has
taught in e.g. Goldsmiths and the Art Academies of Helsinki, Stockholm and
Copenhagen. PhD research on Eija-Liisa Ahtila¹s video installations and
particularly the ways they address the viewer and call for their
participation. Current other work includes coordinating the MFA exhibition
2007 in Trondheim and Centrifugal (an exhibition and exchange project
between Belfast, Helsinki, London and Zagreb exploring Europe from the
shifting perspectives of its boundaries).

³My theoretical research, curatorial work, writing and teaching all revolve
around spaces of communication, contact and conflict, that open up between
art works and their viewers in different contexts. These strands of my
practice are all characterized by an emphasis on the processes of exchange
over products as well as a desire to inhabit this space of dialogue myself,
to think and write with art.²
