AWSoM - the Ambient Weather Sound Machine - uses found-sounds, triggered
by the weather on recycled and found technologies to recreate
environmental sound and feelscapes.
AWSoM is a free media artwork that integrates meteorological sensors
(temperature, windspeed, direction and motion) to trigger and manipulate
sound samples recorded on Two Tree Island nature reserve. Samples of
wildlife – including the rare avocet bird – in competition with trains,
planes, automobiles, dogs and people, create ambient sound and music
responding to changing environmental patterns. The project is a
collaboration between artists Stuart Bowditch and Damien Robinson and
the Mediashed.
AWSoM uses open source software on recycled computers destined for
landfill sites. Two Tree Island, a former sewage farm and rubbish tip
near Leigh-on-Sea, is now an Essex Wildlife Trust nature reserve.
AWSoM will be performed on the Essex Wildlife Trust’s ‘Discovery’ open
Day on Sunday, May 20th, 10.30 – 4pm Come along, bring some food, and
join our picnic! In addition to AWSoM, Essex Wildlife Trust will be
hosting family events, wildlife group displays and guided walks round
the island, plus a refreshment tent.
Go to http://awsom.mediashed.org for full directions to Two Tree Island,
only 15 minutes walk from Leigh on Sea station.
AWSoM is funded by Arts Council England East’s Grants for the Arts.
