*Patriotism, Autonomy or Subversion?*
/The role of the arts in democratic change/
Art is embedded in the world; it is seen and produced through the prism
of the social landscape we populate. But can it be more than this? What
would it be like if culture assumed a more central position in society?
And should art aim to drive the public towards democratic change?

These are just some of the questions to be explored by Dr Barber, Walt
Whitman Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University and Distinguished
Fellow at Demos. Joining him to ponder these matters are* Grayson
Perry*, Turner Prize-winning artist and cultural commentator* Natalie
Haynes* (Times columnist and Newsnight Review regular). The discussion
will be chaired by BBC arts correspondent* Razia Iqbal* and will be
followed by questions from the audience.

We would be delighted if you were able to join us for 04 November 2009
(09:30) at the Barbican Centre in London. To get your ticket for this
free event please visit our web page where you can register for a place.
