Annie,
"ls" is the command-line program for listing a directories contents. You
can add "arguments" following a dash (-) that affect the way the output
is presented. The "ls" program has a very wide range of possible
arguments that you can add so I thought it would be interesting to see
what sorts of words people could make by combining them in different ways.

If you're using OS X you can open a terminal window and type "man ls" to
get a detailed listing of possible arguments. typeing "ls --help" will
also give you a list of arguments with less details.
