As mentioned in a post the other day, I wrote a couple of scripts to
create a real-time generative "painting" of Hekla, one of Iceland's
most famous volcanoes. In Europe it was widely considered to be the
"entryway to Hell". Today, Hekla is also a woman's name. Not all that
common but used rather consistently. Well, Hekla (the volcano) has a
sister. Her name is Katla. Katla is also a woman's name, less frequent
than Hekla but still not all that uncommon (my daughter's name is
Katla). Katla (the volcano) is also active. It's underneath the
Myrdalsjokull glacier. We've been waiting for it to erupt for quite
some time now. The thing is that if Katla erupts, it could be quite
devastating as it's not far from inhabited areas (no one lives near
Hekla). They even have gates on the highway where they can close a
huge section of it if there's a serious threat of Katla erupting. I
found out on the news yesterday that they now have a webcam monitoring
Katla as well. So if you'd rather see a generative painting of Katla
instead of Hekla, just change the following line in the Perl script:

`mplayer -nosound -cache 50 -frames 1 -vo png mms://213.167.158.211/hekla/`;

To:

`mplayer -nosound -cache 50 -frames 1 -vo png mms://213.167.158.211/katla/`;

And you'll get the more sinister of the two sisters.
