The Zero Dollar Laptop Project - Update!

Just before Christmas we posted a call asking for people to donate their
old laptops for a project we are doing at the St Mungos Homeless
organisation in (London), in partnership with Access Space (Sheffield).

We have already received and collected 6 old laptops, and we wish to
thank those who have donated them.

There are a few more out there that we still be collecting soon, but we
still need some more - about 5 old laptops.

So, if you feel that you can help us out - read the original call below
and let us know...

Wishing everyone a happy new year...

===================================

    * Do you have an old, unused laptop taking up space in your home or
office?

    * Like to see it returned to productive life?

    * Do you live in London or Sheffield?

    * If YES, then please donate your old laptop.

DONATE YOUR LAPTOP!

First email us and tell us about it. ruth[dot]catlow[at]furtherfield[dot]org

In order to become a Zero Dollar Laptop your old laptop will need:-

    * a working screen
    * processor-a minumum 1GHz Pentium 3, Athlon, Celeron.
    * 256 (but more ideally 512) ram
    * wireless card would be helpful

We can help you to work this stuff out if you are not sure.

Then we can organise a London or Sheffield pick-up or drop-off in
January 2010

About Zero Dollar Laptop

The Zero Dollar Laptop is a recycled computer, running Free Open Source
Software (FOSS) that is fast and effective- now and long into the future.

In January 2010 we kick off ZDLT in London with clients of a charity for
homeless people; recycling hardware, breaking Windows and installing
FOSS. We will build media laptops and then use them to create music,
graphics and video for distribution over the Internet. Participants will
leave the project with street-smart technical knowledge and a wireless
enabled media laptop, classier than any shiny power-book.

Participants will also be invited to take part in wider ZDLT cultural
activities: music making, public exhibitions and publications.
