a small section of the north facing spike in the M-set.
this was very tedious to produce. it took four hours or so.
the image is 80000 pixels tall, by 48 wide. only a very small
section of the spike is shown, unless you suppose the m-set itself
is the size of the universe, in which case this might be very big
i don't have any idea about specifics of scale though.
compared to the image dimension, the spike itself is very much
taller as is evident from the fact that each side of it is
verging on being parallel with the other.
the black areas either side of the spike are the inside of the
M-set, these areas reached 500000 iterations before giving up.

colour map used: headache.map originally distributed with fractint.
there is not much detail in the image, i experimented with doubling
the iteration count but this slowed things down even more so, and
there was not much to gain from the extra detail without zooming in
to a miniscule section of the spike.
so for every black pixel either side of the spike there were over
500000 calculations performed. the max width of the black area each
side is 15 pixels, so 15 * 2 * 800000 * 500000 is a lot of
computations.
the program used was mdz. the image was not generated from the
command line to a file, but generated in the gui. the gtk library
seems to have some kind of limitation to the dimensions of windows
it produces, the window of mdz was only 14552 pixels tall (or
thereabouts) and not the full 80000. consequently there seemed to
be some error in some of the re-drawing routines appearing as array
wrap-around.

the image is not viewable in the following piece of software
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091216
Iceweasel/3.5.6 (like Firefox/3.5.6; Debian-3.5.6-1)
the software claims the image has errors, but i know otherwise.
there is a settings file of the image in the saved_settings
directory on the mdz home page. it is called north_facing_spike.mdz.
do not load it into mdz without first reducing the width that mdz is
calculating to. the settings files only store the aspect ratio of the
images conta
