The Creation of Color in Eighteenth-Century Europe

by Sarah Lowengard

This is a book about the organization of science and technology in
eighteenth-century Europe, about the relationships of each to the other
and to the worlds in which they existed. The underlying theme is the
collection and arrangement of information, and the subsequent employment
of that information to create a place for its collector—a person or
occasionally an institution—within the modern world of the eighteenth
century. Colloquially expressed, it is a study of contemporary answers
to a question—"What do you think you're doing?"—asked of institutions
and governments as well as individuals.
