Perhaps Unfamiliar Japan? Any of the books on Japan are good - they're odd 
sketched. He didn't speak Japanese, was married to a Japanese, taught 
school in Japan, collected all sorts of lore, was fascinated by Shinto, 
and has been revered by the Japanese.
