I've been unnerved, particularly at the ELO Conf recently, at the ubiquitous presence of I-everythings; in some cases, it was hard to hold a conversation in real life at times. I have a lot of objections to Apple - not to the quality of their products etc. - but to their cultural position (which isn't the result of quality; it's far more complex). Apple's touched a techno-fetishist nerve; the problem is, judging from students I've had and other conversations, it's difficult for people to see outside the box, and Apple obviously likes it that way. I'm not trying to open up the usual debates here; I'm just bothered by the constant branding of I-this and -that, as if there were an authentic liberalism here instead of highly successful and rarely questioned corporate tagging.
