AirStation 1 is a site-specific installation created by Dion Laurent in a
1930's Art Deco Gas Station directly across the road from the Station
Museum in Houston,Texas. AirStation 1 is a self-contained,
self-sustaining bio-environment - a one-room emergency AirStation
supplied air as a greenhouse, a plant based oxygen biosphere garden
created over the past few months within the built out 1930's Deco gas
station building. The Ins...tallation includes one of this years Art Car
Parade 1st place winners, AirPlane1, a full-scale wood and metal
sculptural work, a home-built electric vehicle based on a 1956 Cessna
170. It is a reflection to a world of ever increasing air pollution,
ozone action days, water shortages, droughts and oil spills.

EarthMan 2 is a performance piece which allows the viewer to consider
our global biosphere on a human scale by appearing in public places
wearing a fully-functioning, self-sustaining suit conceptually capable
of maintaining a human in otherwise unlivable environments on earth or
even in outer space.

All 3 elements of this performance and installation blend art and
science and relate to NASA's research of Advanced Life Support Systems
(ALSS) and Bio-regenerative Life Support, self contained and
self-sustaining life support systems.

AirStation 1 is an ongoing project that will develop through December 2010.

Same night, same time:
The Station Museum of Contemporary Art wishes to announce the opening of
the major solo-exhibition A Thousand Tongues Burn and Sing by James
Drake. The exhibition will open Saturday, October 16, 2010, from 7-10
pm, with refreshments and music.
