There he was, a few years back, always on the telly. While the rest of
them, the politicians, were being named and shamed over their fiddling
of expenses, Vince Cable was different. Somehow above all that. Not
the same as them; he was a professional, an experienced guy, didn't
mince his words.

He was a Tiger.

When he spoke, others listened.

You see Vince was the only politician who made any sense about the
financial crash, though surrounded by idiots that was maybe not such a
great achievement. So he was always on telly, talking to Paxman. And
he wasn't a snob either, so he came over well, especially in contrast
to Paxman.

He had integrity.

With the government pouring public money into bailing out bank fraud,
Vince was always the voice of reason, authority, an honest man. Maybe
because he was one of the few politicians, maybe the only one, with
experience of real life.

He was always calm, assured, very much in control.

The elections were coming up. If only Labour had Vince Cable they
would be good again, we felt. We didn't really want Labour,
Conservatives or Liberal - we wanted Vince Cable - to save the country
from the banks.

But as is well known the election gave us as a deal between parties.
Rather than him taking over the finances we got a baby-faced Etonian
sadist, who drains blood out of the poor, while his tory mates look on
grinning.

And where is Vince? He's still there, he's got a job with the
government, but we dont hear from him any more. He seems to have
disappeared into the apparatus.

Has he sold out? We've seen him briefly in the background on TV,
looking a bit down. Is he upset? Was he just playing a game with us
all along, just to get into power?

Was he really just a paper Tiger?
