If Not, Then What? - an anti-cuts project creating new visions of the future.
1st -13th March 2011, Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground, Chelsea College of Art & Design, London SW1P 4JU Programme of events, performances, discussions and actions called If Not, Then What?, as part of Chelsea Programme, taking place at the Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground, Chelsea College of Art & Design in London (next to Tate Britain http://bit.ly/exb6VG). If Not, Then What? is an anti-cuts project creating new visions of the future. It operates as a temporary creative think-tank for arts involvement with politics, aiming to foster criticality, action and hope in the current climate of dissent. Events will take place in the project HQ, a specially commissioned pavilion by artists Charlesworth, Lewandowski & Mann, built with the assistance of students from the Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London. This tangible symbol of political resistance will also function as a space for the development, exchange and creation of itinerant ideas, constructive strategies and portable artworks that can be brought to occupations, rallies and demonstrations, such as the NUS/TUC rally in Hyde Park on Saturday 26 March and beyond. What’s happening: Friday 4 March 2011, 6-8pm - official opening event of the project and inauguration of the temporary pavilion built by Charlesworth, Lewandowski & Mann. The event will coincide with the launch of a new campaign by the Post-Capitalist Party, whose one and only councillor Sophie Nathan returned 131 votes in the 2010 elections. Monday 7 March, 1.30-5pm - artist Ania Bas’ Alternative Society workshop. Using installations and manifestos, actions, interventions and live art, participants will build a portable and radical vision of the world in a half day, fit it into a bag and deliver it to the general public. Advance booking required Thursday 10 March, 1.30-5pm - artists group Grunts for the Arts will run the Real Trident Replacement Challenge workshop. Rather than retooling for a new Cold War, Grunts for the Arts are calling on individuals/groups to re-invent the nuclear capability of the UK as cultural projects. Advance booking required Saturday 12 March 2011, 11am-4pm – a day of live interventions, workshops and experimental performances. Appropriating the format of the political rally, this event coincides with the Liberal Democrats conference in Sheffield. The day includes a seminar on political gatherings led by Raimi Gbadamosi, a slogan-generating workshop with Gethan and Myles, interventions by Mark McGowan (The Artist Taxi Driver), performances by workshop participants and Ania Bas and Grunts for the Arts. Leibniz performance collective will be presenting the Book Of Blood for the seventh time, inviting members of the public to donate a pin-prick of blood which is used to write a letter from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in a leather-bound book. The pavilion will be open daily (except Sundays) to also host open exchange, discussion and direct action workshops by groups working to resist the public sector cuts, including the Commonist Gallery, Strategies for Free Education and a screening of SLET 080311 Flocking of Birds – a programme of artists films presented by Performance Klub Fiskulturnik to celebrate 100th International Women’s Day. Times to be confirmed (check our website and facebook event for updates). If Not, Then What? will be accompanied by a series of commissioned artist responses on London’s art radio station Resonance FM www.resonancefm.com More information can be found on the project website www.ifnothenwhat.co.uk You can like our facebook event too: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=155814911140912&ref=mf _______________________________________________ NetBehaviour mailing list [email protected] http://www.netbehaviour.org/mailman/listinfo/netbehaviour
