Manu Luksch & Mukul Patel: KAYAK LIBRE Digbeth
AiR SEARCH ENGINE at Grand Union
21 March - 2 April 2011

KAYAK LIBRE <free thinking/free transport>
Manu Luksch & Mukul Patel

KAYAK LIBRE is a temporary experimental infrastructure for Digbeth in
the form of a water taxi service along the canal network. The fare is a
conversation: reflections about alternative modes of transport and
possible futures of the canal infrastructure. The kayak ride provides a
new perspective on the urban surroundings - a low viewpoint, slow pace
and quiet motion that encourages fresh thinking.

An interactive map features location-tagged images, excerpts from the
conversations aboard the vessel, and radical visions for utilising the
rare slice of public space that the waterways provide. Users may upload
their own data to the site and join in the conversation to design a
sustainable and progressive future.

SEARCH ENGINE
During the AiR SEARCH ENGINE, Grand Union serves as place of arrival and
departure, a laboratory and display space. The artist duo Manu Luksch &
Mukul Patel were invited to bring KAYAK LIBRE to Digbeth, and to develop
its online application. Throughout their residency, the project space
will host an exhibition of the material and documentation produced
through KAYAK LIBRE in East London, a public talk, a series of workshops
and a screening programme.

KAYAK LIBRE Digbeth is produced in collaboration with Fierce &
or-bits.com and with the support of VIVID and the Austrian Cultural
Forum, London.
